Vaping has been marketed to consumers as a safer and healthier alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. Unfortunately, consumers, officials, and medical professionals are seeing an increasing number of vaping-related injuries and illnesses. Fractures and burn injuries have been reported when the lithium-ion battery powering the vape device explodes, but now consumers are also facing lung injuries or illnesses.
Officials are investigating reports of hundreds of cases of lung illnesses that appear to be related to vaping and e-cigarette use. Many of the victims are teens and young adults.
These lung injuries can be difficult to diagnose initially because the symptoms are so similar to other illnesses. Symptoms of these lung illnesses and lung injuries may include one or more of the following:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Weight loss
- Difficulty breathing
Some of those experiencing lung injury after vaping have required lengthy hospitalizations, intensive care, steroids, and ventilators following respiratory failure. And, despite treatment, some patients have reportedly seen little to no improvement in their medical condition.
Reports indicate confirmed cases of this lung injury/illness in California, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. New York and New Jersey are investigating reported cases. Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah are also aware of potential cases.
