What is a Lithium-Ion Battery?
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries used in many portable electronic devices such as vape pens, e-cigarettes, and cell phones. They are also used in larger products such as electric cars. Some smaller devices use a single battery cell; others combine multiple cells into larger batteries.
Why Do Lithium-Ion Batteries Catch on Fire or Explode?
Lithium-ion battery fires or explosions are often the result of manufacturing and/or design defects. For example, if the separator inside the battery is too thin, improperly installed, or made from flawed materials, this can result in a short circuit. This in turn can cause the rapid accumulation of heat, pushing the battery into a condition known as thermal runaway. During thermal runaway, the temperature of a battery cell increases so rapidly that the cell is not able to dispel the increased heat. In these conditions, there can be a fiery discharge of all the energy in the battery within seconds, resulting in fire and/or explosion.
Do I Need a Lawyer?
If you’re injured in a lithium-ion battery explosion or fire, a law firm with specific experience in the area will know how to work with you to maximize your claim so that you can focus on recovering from your injuries. You may have claims against the manufacturer, retailers, distributors, and others in the supply chain. You need a lawyer who knows how to litigate these cases, accurately identify the responsible parties, and work with medical and technical experts.
