Approximately 400 million people around the world use a computer anti-virus software made by a Russian company, Kaspersky Lab. Kaspersky's popular anti-virus software is used by individual consumers as well as by American government agencies such as the Department of Defense, State Department, Department of Energy, Justice Department, Treasury Department, and the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The software is now believed to have been used by Russian intelligence to prowl computers for sensitive information and documents. For example, classified materials are believed to have been stolen from the computer of a National Security Agency employee. The exact depth and breadth of the intrusion is still under investigation.
- U.S. officials were recently alerted to the intrusion and have since ordered the removal of all Kaspersky software from government computers.
